1 week in France – Why visit France by car?
A road trip in France is the easiest, most convenient and most flexible way to visit the towns, villages, countryside and remote corners of France. Indeed, France is a small country. Places to visit are numerous but one can easily roll from site to site in less than 3 hours of road. Moreover, traveling by car in France is the freedom to leave on time that one chooses, to stop where one wants, to eat when and where one wants, to arrive at the hotel to any time …

From Brittany to Bordeaux – Stages of my itinerary
1 week tour in France – Day 1 Mont Saint Michel
Arrival at Charles de Gaulle airport – Car rental and drive to Mont Saint Michel – 4 hours drive (385 km) – Night very close to Mont Saint Michel.
Which hotel near Mont Saint Michel? Le Relais Du Roy
Located just 1.9 km from Mont Saint-Michel, this hotel is very convenient. Parking is free, as is the shuttle to Mont-Saint-Michel (stop 50 meters from the hotel). What’s more, the on-site gastronomic restaurant serving regional specialties will delight you … See this hotel on Booking
1 week tour in France – Day 2 Dinard
Visit of Mont Saint Michel. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most famous tourist sites in France. At the top of this rock is the magnificent Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel overlooking the bay.
In the evening, drive about 1 hour to Dinard (60 km) – Night in Dinard.
Which hotel in Dinard? Hotel Didier Méril
This tiny hotel really charmed me (9 rooms). Ideally located in the historic center of Dinard and facing the sea, I chose this hotel for its superb view of the Prieuré beach but especially for its gourmet restaurant. See this hotel on Booking
1 week tour in France – Day 3 Dinard and Dol de Bretagne
Visit of Dinard. You can walk along the corniche and stroll to admire its beautiful homes. Dinard is elegant and picturesque.
Then drive about 40 minutes (35 km) to Dol de Bretagne. Walk in this small medieval village with its half-timbered houses and visit the 13th century Cathedral.
After discovering the pretty Brittany village, drive around 30 minutes to Saint Malo (28 km) to spend the night.
Which hotel in Saint Malo? The Golden Tulip
I recommend a hotel very well located within the ramparts of Saint-Malo just 5 minutes walk from the port: the Golden Tulip Saint Malo. It has all the services and facilities of a high-end hotel but its real asset is undoubtedly its breakfast buffet and composed of local and very varied products. The restaurant also offers local products and regional specialties. See this hotel on Booking
1 week tour in France – Day 4 Noirmoutier
In the morning you can visit Saint-Malo. You will be able to make the tour of Saint-Malo following the ramparts to discover the city and the superb sight on the sea and the distant islands. Saint Malo is worth a visit for, among others, its atmosphere, its narrow streets, its ramparts, its Cathedral Saint Vincent and the tomb of Châteaubriand.
Then drive about 3h15 (261 km) to Noirmoutier.
Noirmoutier is a peninsula on the French Atlantic coast in the Vendée department. You will discover beautiful landscapes with salt marshes, pine forests, sand dunes … Visit the village of Noirmoutier-en-Ile and its small port.
Which hotel in Noirmoutier? The General Elbée Hotel & Spa
It is simply the most beautiful hotel to stay in front of the medieval castle of Noirmoutier in the village of Noirmoutier-en-l’lle. See this hotel on Booking
1 week tour in France – Day 5 La Rochelle and Bordeaux
Departure early in the morning for 2h30 of road to reach La Rochelle. Visit the old port in the city center and the San Nicolas Tower. Lunch in La Rochelle.
Then you will have to drive about 3h to arrive in Bordeaux in the evening. Dinner and overnight in Bordeaux.
Which hotel in Bordeaux – Côté Cour de L’Hôtel Particulier
This is my favorite accommodation in the center of Bordeaux (for my small budget). It is not a hotel but a guest house where you feel at home.
The elegant rooms are fully equipped but you can also order breakfast. The location in the historic center of Bordeaux is simply ideal for sightseeing: between the Grand Theater and the Saint-André cathedral, it is located in a quiet and peaceful pedestrian street. See this hotel on Booking
